Simple tips for travelling with pets

(NC) Canada is home to more than 28 million pets. For many of us, our furry companions are part of the family, so it’s no surprise that pet-friendly travel is growing in popularity. Whether it’s a weekend getaway or a long-haul road trip, here are some tips for travelling with pets:

  1. Safety first. Before you leave, check with your vet to ensure your pet’s vaccinations are up to date and you have all their necessary medications. Some pets adjust more easily to a vehicle or new environments than others, so packing their favourite toys or blankets can help reduce anxiety.
Ensure your travel kit also includes food, water, bowls, waste bags, a collar or harness and their leash. If your pet isn’t microchipped, for peace of mind, consider investing in a GPS tracker that can be attached to the collar—especially if they’ll be off leash.
  2. Check local regulations. If you’re travelling across provinces or heading to one of Canada’s many scenic national parks, look at local pet regulations in advance. Many destinations are pet-friendly but both leash rules and dog-specific areas can vary.
If you’re heading to a major city, pet-friendly parks and patios are becoming more common, so there are typically numerous ways to include your pet in your plans.
  3. Find pet-friendly accommodation. Not all hotels or short-term rentals allow pets and even for those that do, the rules can vary greatly based on pet size and number, so it’s best to confirm any policies before booking. For example, Choice Hotels Canada, has hundreds of pet-friendly properties across the country allowing you to experience more with your pet.
  4. Be a considerate guest. Whether you’re at a hotel or out and about in public spaces with your pet, always be courteous of others. Be mindful that not everyone is comfortable around animals. Keep pets leashed in shared spaces, always clean up after them and avoid leaving them unattended in the room unless allowed. This helps avoid disrupting other guests or causing unnecessary stress to your pet.

While travelling with a pet can take a bit of extra planning, the unforgettable shared experiences you’ll gain from it, like hikes in the Canadian wilderness or swimming in a crisp lake can make it all worthwhile. Find pet-friendly options at choicehotels.com.
